Position overview:
The Database Administrator & Programmer ("DBA") is responsible for the performance, integrity and security of the company databases. Primary functions include planning, programming, and troubleshooting in the functioning of our database as well as its interaction with our various sites and reporting tools, with the goal that data remains secure, consistent, clearly defined and accessible to users in a form that suits their needs.
Responsibilities Include:
Programming and development
- Becoming an expert in the existing procedural coding of the database to be able to respond to end user requests and ensure change requests align with both operational protocol and database protocol
- Mapping out the conceptual design for planned database changes; creating requirements lists for vendors
- Assisting with database integration projects such as integration with accounting or job board vendors, installing new applications or customizing existing applications in order to make them fit for purpose
- Serving as primary point of contact with external resources on database programming changes; testing those change
Data and application management
- Monitoring performance and managing parameters to provide fast query responses to front-end users
- Ensuring adequate data security, storage, and recovery provisions are in place and functioning correctly
- Capacity planning; Recommending and assisting with plans for refining the physical design of the database and enhancements to improve performance and data integrity
- Managing our Crystal Reports tool including: troubleshooting report bugs, creating new reports, managing changes to user subscriptions and scheduled reports
- Responding to miscellaneous requests for data by end users including crafting custom SQL queries; Uploading new data into database
- Assisting with the creation of queries for website dashboards and desired search functionality
- Controlling access permissions and privileges; assisting with providing streamlined user login experience for our various applications
Training and documenting
- Developing and leading training to assist in employee onboarding; instruct on new technologies and procedures
- Establishing a method for documentation of programming change requests, maintaining data standards, including adherence to any applicable data laws.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in information systems or related field
- MySQL or related DBA Certification
- Minimum 3- 4 years working in a professional IT-related position
- Lasso (preferred; desire to learn Lasso as this is the primary programming language used); PHP and JavaScript
- Knowledge of SQL required, ability to read and write basic SQL queries; Crystal Reports experience preferred
- mySQL 5.0 or proficiency working with similar databases
- Knowledge of manipulating data (.csv, .tab & similar files)
- Solid working understanding of HTML (CSS, HTML4/XHTML, XML)
- Working understanding of networking and TCP/IP functionality
- Experience working in Mac environments is a plus
- Self motivated for continuing education
- Strong interpersonal skills, ability to translate business needs into solutions
- Excellent problem solving skills
- Ability and willingness to work extended hours to assist with occasional emergency/down-time issues as well perform certain database management functions during non-core business hours
